Samarkand is one of the most legendary cities in Central Asia. A trip to Samarkand is a gateway to the legends of the East.

Samarkand is a Glorious city in the heart of Uzbekistan, steeped in myths and legends. It is as if the pages of ancient history come alive before your eyes. Founded more than 2700 years ago, Samarkand has long been the most important point on the Great Silk Road, connecting East and West. Today, the city attracts visitors from all over the world, promising an encounter with the magic of antiquity and the charm of the modern East.

Ancient and majestic Samarkand

Book a tour to Uzbekistan with our company and we will show you majestic Samarkand and other historic cities of the country.

History and legends

The city was known long before the arrival of Greeks under Alexander the Great, who called it 'Marakanda'. At different times, Samarkand was the capital of great empires, which left their mark on its architecture and culture. A particularly important period in the history of Samarkand was the reign of Amir Timur (Tamerlane), who made the city his capital and turned it into a cultural and scientific Centre of the world.

Architectural treasures

The heart of Samarkand is Registan Square, known as the 'Heart of Asia'. Three madrasahs - Ulugbek, Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kari - rise majestically above the square, creating a unique combination of monumentality and grace. Each building is adorned with bright blue domes and intricate ornamentation, symbolizing wealth and power.

Not far from Registan Square is the Bibi Khanim Mosque, built by order of Amir Timur (Tamerlane) in the honor of his favorite wife. The grandeur of this building is emphasized by its size and decorative elements, which create a sense of harmony and power.

Equally impressive is the Gur Amir Mausoleum, where Tamerlane himself and his descendants rest, as well as the spiritual representatives – Mir Sayyid Baraka, Amir Temur's mentor, and Sayyid Umar, from the line of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The domes of the mausoleum, covered with azure blue tiles, resemble the sky, while the interior is filled with intricate carvings and inlays.

Legendary places

Be sure to visit the Ulugbek Observatory. This is perhaps the most mysterious place, shrouded in secrets and legends. This is where modern science was born. Built in the 15th century, the observatory was one of the most advanced scientific institutions of its time. The astronomical tables compiled by Ulugbek remained the standard for several centuries.

Another place worth visiting is the necropolis of Shahi Zinda. It is an ensemble of mausoleums, each with its own unique design and decoration. The name of the necropolis translates as 'living king' and is linked to the legend of Kusam Ibn Abbas, a relative and associate of the Prophet Muhammad, who is said to have been buried here.

Folk customs and traditions

The people of Samarkand are proud of their traditions and culture. The city is famous for its craftsmen, who continue to create unique items in ceramics, cloth and metal. In the markets you can see real works of art made by hand.

Also worth mentioning is the national cuisine, which is an important part of the local culture. Dishes such as pilaaf, shorpa, manty and samsa have become the hallmark of Uzbek cuisine. Don't forget to try chak-chak, a traditional delicacy made of dough and honey.

Transport and accommodation

There are several ways to get to Samarkand. The international airport receives flights from many countries, and the railway line provides easy access from other cities in Uzbekistan. The city has a well-developed infrastructure and offers a wide range of accommodation. There are colorful hostels and traditional hotels, as well as luxury hotels.

When to visit Samarkand

The best time to visit Samarkand is spring and autumn, when the weather is most favorable for long walks and sightseeing. The summer months can be quite hot, but this will not deter lovers of exoticism and vivid impressions.

Conclusion

A trip to Samarkand is not just another tourist destination. It is an immersion in history, culture and legends that have been formed over centuries. Every stone here breathes the past and every street tells its own story. A visit to Samarkand will leave you with unforgettable impressions and will bring you back to this magical place again and again. You will bring back many new impressions and beautiful photos to impress your friends on social networks and messengers!
